I'm trying to decide on some tow points for the rear of my YJ that are quick and cheap until I get a bumper.

Anyone have any ideas?

I want just a couple of D-rings but I can't find any that will bolt onto the existing frame.

Also, I do not have a hitch

If you have existing holes you can use, try to get some eye bolts or eye nuts big enough to get a strap or worst case a shackle through. I'd only do that though if you have very sturdy mount points and use big washers to spread the load. McFadden-Dale Hardware on West Reno would be the best bet to find either of those.

Eye nuts: http://kenforging.thomasnet.com/viewite ... ame=&pane=

Eye Bolts: http://kenforging.thomasnet.com/categor ... lpver=1001

The better way IMO would be to get some strap or plate big enough to use existing bolt holes (if they exist) and weld a d-ring to it, then bolt it up. You might not have the tools necessary for that though :|

If you can swing by my place this weekend (Stewart & Lamb) I should be available to see what you could fab up and if it involves any welding I could probably get it done for you during next week. 496-3358.

Right on...Thanks Gary. If you plan on going to the Logandale run on Sunday am I will be there, you can see what I am talking about then. I will probably just end up forking out the $$ and buying the bumper I want!

on my yj i just bolted a pair of tow hooks to the rear frame. there should be one hole on each side that already exsists just in front of the rear shackle bolt. i drilled one more hole on each side and bolted them on. they've worked great for yanking and pulling. i used grade 5 bolts instead of grade 8's so the bolts would break before the frame. 8)

No, I'll likely be hiding for the rest of the month unless we have a club run. My "to do" list keeps "to doing" on me

BTW was that you going West on Tropicana today?

Aahh...I hear ya!! :D

Yes, that probably was me. I went to McFaddendale and picked up some eye nuts to bolt onto the back of the frame. They are big enough for a strap to fit through, so I'll try that out.

Catch ya later.

Good idea, Brad. If my eye nuts don't work then I'll try that.

Toyota only put one tow hook on the front of the 2002 Tacoma, so I put on shackles (or D-rings as some call them) into existing holes in the frame at the other three corners.

I've only had to use once - a hold line when a portion of a narrow trail high in the Sierra Nevada sloughed off from under my truck and it went upon two wheels and then teetered back and forth. Had to stand on the door sill, clutching onto the open door window frame to counterbalance the truck until a young man in a Jeep came along. He didn't have a yank strap, so he spent a harrowing ten minutes trying to retrieve mine in the back of my truck while the truck teetered. He hooked up and yanked me out of the situation.

Al I have a set of tow hooks that used to be on the rear of my YJ before I bought the hitch. I cut them down to 1 hole and bolted them to the holes on the rear frame behind the shackle. This would be an easy bolt on app. You can have them if you want them ( Yes that means FREE)

Old threads are fun to ressurect from time to time. Brings fresh ideas and spurs talk on the simple but necessary things we often overlook or forget about.
