A question was posted about this place as far as what's left there. Being it's within the Mojave Preserve, I was wondering if anyone had been there recently? You can either post up there, or here and I'll pass the info along.

If there's anything worth seeing, sounds like a good NB run since you can tie in numerous other spots around there.

I can't plan going anywhere right now. I'm having issues with the Bronco popping out of gear when I'm on high angles offroading. I hope it's a linkage issue and not synchros. I'm going to be trying some stuff with it this week and then I'll know for sure, but I'm not feeling very optimistic. The Scout is getting ready for surgery as well. Rebuilding the transfer, trans and motor.

I know this thread is a year old, and not sure if you guys did the trip to the Vanderbilt site or not. The old Railroad(s) and traction road and the El Dorado trail through this area has always been an interest to me and I have explored and researched them some.

I have this little story about the California Mine near Vontrigger. I put this write-up together for some desert friends a few months back, and it’s just sitting on my hard drive, unlike the other writings for this area which are on a CD in storage. This is more about $$ money stuff at the turn of the century than 4x4 exploring.

I was out in the east Mojave Desert a few miles North of Goffs at the California Mine (CM) in the Vontrigger Hills.

IMO the CM is an interesting back drop of our current times. The CM was formed in 1906 and had a few dozen employees, machines, and shafts when the Panic of 1907 hit, which killed mine operations all around the country, and hit the Mojave very hard. As you may recall the Panic of 07 (aka Depression of 07) was because* the Knickerbocker Trust failed during a leveraged loan deal to corner the copper market (think AIG and defult swaps) which fell apart and started a run on the banks, and cutting the stock market value in half.

All throught this depression the CM was kept running and grew the operation. The mine was mainly a gold mine but went thru the trouble to pull out the copper at the same time. I find it interesrting about the copper, one thing it was the prize that increased* the panic of 07, and was the reason other mining operation by-passed the CM area, and I suspect partly the reason why the mine profited while other gold mines in the Mojave went belly-up.

*As any student of history knows a deperession seldom have one ‘cause’, but many things come together. The Panic of 07 was set in montion by the SF earthquake of 06, then interest rates in England, and then the failure of the Trust’s.

Hope you enjoyed this. :)

Brad: If I'm not mistaken, you took us on the Vanderbilt run sometime last year. You also showed us a very large cave, large enough to drive a truck into.
I'm also in if you decide to go.

this was the tuesday run that my cam bearing gave up the ghost.
my jeep still got me home, yet i was advised the next day to have it towed and ended up at jim marsh. the ominous phone call came the next day from bobbette.
so, am ready to tackle vanderbilt again and see how the jeep drives w/o all those nasty idiot lights blazing on the dash.
maybe a tuesday pre-run before a club run?
haven't seen travis or paula for a while.
there was a couple of pucker factor areas that would be nice to preview.
i know there is a few pictures of people straddling that last wash that were pretty cool.
i chose the off-camber, for reasons i can't remember.
the steering wheel still has the fingerprints imbedded in the plastic.

Beth, as I recall, you followed the others who went off camber and tried to go on one side of the giant canyon in the middle of the road. I went "hmmm... I bet I could straddle that", and Paula said "you aren't seriously going to... what!!!"

Brad, that was the run you led, Marla broke a sway bar connect, and I replaced it in my garage after. My pictures say it was March 18th, 2008.

But, we'd be glad to go on any run that you lead Brad, I know Paula and I end up learning so much about the areas by going with you. Are you still going to lead us out to Clark Mountain sometime?

Travis
