I decided that the next thing I'm going to buy for my jeep (Just Empty Every Pocket), is a replacement for the stereo in my 2005 Rubi. I want one that I can plug my iPod into directly. I rarely listen to the radio, and never bother with CDs anymore. Who knew CDs would become obsolete so quickly?

Currently, I use one of those FM transmitter thingies that allows you to pick up your iPod signal on your car stereo, but it's not ideal. Even in the back country, I often have trouble finding a strong signal that doesn't fade or hiss. And the cord flops around on bumpy roads, inevitably hitting the channel button, and switching it to a station with very loud static, or worse, very loud Mexican music. (Kidding.... kind-of).

So, I was wondering if anyone had advice on a decent, not-too-expensive stereo?

Dawn...

There are a number of radios out there that can do what you want. Last year, I installed one in the Gold Rush. The brand I bought was Dual, model #4110. It is called "mechless", which means there is nothing mechanical in the unit, it is all electrical. It worked very well. It had a digital screen and three types of aux inputs, including one for an mp3 player. I gave $40.00 for it at Wal Mart.

The only down side to this particular unit, was there was no clock and it put out less power than the Jeep unit. I had to turn it up a little more. :o

What ever you get, you'll need an adaptor which goes between the radio and the dash. If you need help getting it installed, I might know someone.

You might want to consider a radio that has built in bluetooth for your telephone. It adds a little to the cost, but with the new law going in to effect next year banning talking on a cell phone without a hands free device, it might be a good idea.

Thanks for the advice! I guess the first stop will be a trip to Wally World to see what they've got. I suppose I could always stick a separate clock in the jeep... don't really need to have one integrated with the stereo.

Cheers,
Dawn

I found this interesting stereo...

http://www.bossaudio.com/main/1205

I don't play cds in the car anymore, so don't need a cd player, and I am intrigued with the iPod holder. That could be very nice. If, of course, the iPod doesn't bounce right out!

The price is still under $100, so that makes me happy. It's too new to have much in the way of reviews online, though. I don't suppose any of you'ze guys has one?

Opinions?

just use the sd card slot, that wont bounce out. load an sd with mp3s from your computer then put it into radio. The usb slot (thumb drive) will likely bounce/vibrate out and so will the ipod if it does not lock in. 16 gig sd cards are around $30 and most have a usb adapter for your computer.

I don't understand all this, Justin. I still listen to AM and those little things that have magnetic tape in them

And I bet the both of you still walk around carrying that little transistor radio all the time.

Another good place to look for a new radio is Crutchfield. http://www.crutchfield.com

Ok Bob. I actually do have a sony transistor that cost me $ 9.00. I listen to an AM oldies station around the 1300 mark. ( can't tell exactly because it's a dial). I love low tech. Brad and I are a couple of old school SoCal dudes. 8) I remember when a "good car radio" was a front AND a rear speaker with reverb.

I remember the "station preset" buttons that were mechanical. I think you pulled them out to set the station, then, when pushing them in, the radio dial was mechanically pushed to the frequency you wanted - the little plastic line indicating the frequency moved along the stereo face until it got where you wanted it to be - no digital nothing. You had to push pretty darn hard to get the button to work. As a young kid, I thought it was pretty cool, seeing the indicator line jump around if you sequentially mashed the buttons.

...and, to this day, I am still easily amused....

How about a muntz 8 track player that was as big as an air conditioner.

Oh yes... I also remember 8tracks. :D They were very big when I was in high school, but that was a long time ago. About the same time Lee surrended to Grant, I think. Anyone remember 4tracks? They weren't very popular. They faded quickly and were quickly replaced by the 8tracks in the late 60's.

I do remember those 4 tracks John. God we're old. Just don't ask me to
remember what I did yesterday.

So, after a little more research, I still came back to the Boss stereo I mentioned earlier.

Thank you for installing it, John! I'm going to have to start keeping a list of all the things you've helped me add to my jeep. :D

So far, so good. The sound quality is excellent, and the docking device seems secure. I'll give it a good workout in Beatty. Now if I cam just figure out how to set the clock. The dang "made in China" manual says nothing about it. And I thought it was made in the USA, too.
