Thanks for these links. Now that it is easier to get a FCC license without having to know morse code, every one should get a ham radio. They have better distance then a CB, and you can talk to rescue crews if needed.

We got a brief on these at the VLLS that Geno attended a couple of weeks ago.

The cost of one of these radios is not much more then a good CB radio either.

It IS possible to have a normal life after ham radio, but you have to work at it.

If we all have ham tickets, what do we use for a band/frequency?

I suggest 146.52 mHz simplex or 146.58 mHz simplex. Two meter rigs are cheap and plentiful and the antennas are short.

BTW, I'd like a partner in another rig to try out some FRS handhelds with. We take them along each time. $40 buys a real nice one - no license required.

Congrats.

I'm KE7FYA. I might actually have to talk to someone on the radio at some point :D I got the license and radio setup a few years back just for APRS and vehicle tracking.

Looking through the earlier messages in this thread, was a frequency chosen for group runs? I'm going to pick up a Cobra 75 CB radio, but will have the 2m along as well.

We never really adopted a freq that I know of. Not enough hams on our trails. Going to have to go shopping for a radio now, thinking a 2m mobile mounted in the Jeep or a handheld. Hmmm, 5 watts on your belt or 75w in the Jeep :? Portability or Extra Range. So many options when you start looking at multi band radios too.
