I received this e-mail and thought I'd pass it along if anyone is interested.

Subj: Mojave Road Cairn Building Thursday 22 Feb.

Hi Friends of the Mojave Road/Desert Explorers (or wantabes),

Twenty three years ago volunteers built cairns and put up poles over a sandy stretch of the historic old Mojave Road between Rasor Road and Basin Road to help travelers find their way. This is the floodplain of the Mojave River, and many of these cairns and poles have gone where ever old route finding helpers go when they get old.

News Flash: The route over the floodplain is now so poorly marked that Dennis Casebier, (THE Mojave Road guy himself) got lost! Be gentle with the poor old guy, he is getting up in years (unlike the rest of us). A new Guidebook will be issued later this year (including GPS data) in the hope that this will not happen again.

Therefore this call to arms is issued:

All good men who have an interest in (or have benefited from the work put into Mojave Road) are needed to put up new cairns (and a couple of poles) to keep Casebier and other travelers on the right track.

Date: Thursday, Feb. 22
Time: 9:00 a.m. - all day
Place: Basin Road exit, south side, I-15 (about 16 miles west of Baker)

We will place cairns mostly from a point starting about three miles toward Rasor Road and proceeding westward to the railroad bridge near Basin Road. Rocks for the cairns will be picked up from near Basin Road.

If you have friends, bring 'em. If you don't have friend, make some new ones and bring 'em!

Neal Johns
