In case anyone is planning on running the Mojave Road anytime soon, or wants to do a little volunteer work.

CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS -- CAIRNS NEEDED ON THE MOJAVE ROAD
28 April 2016

The MDHCA is preparing another reprint of the fourth edition (2010) of the Mojave Road Guide. In checking the conditions of the road before doing so, we detected an alarming lack of cairns along the early section of the Mojave Road from Mile 3.5 to Mile 7.6. Cairns need to be rebuilt along this four-mile stretch to assist travelers with staying on the trail. As described in the Mojave Road Guide, "…there are no signs on the Mojave Road. Rock cairns aid the traveler by indicating the route." Actually, the BLM has sprinkled a few carsonite trail signs labeled "Mojave Road" here and there, but not enough to provide assurance to travelers they are on the correct route.
Cairns are traditionally placed on the right side of the road (traveling east to west) anywhere there may be confusion about the route. They are placed as often as needed. The wash immediately west (upstream) of the Needles Highway starting at Mile 3.5 (2010 edition) has become a very busy and torn-up area with camping and off-road vehicle activity, which has destroyed cairns in the wash. Current travelers on the Mojave Road are not encountering their first cairn until Mile 5.1!
If you plan to head out on the Mojave Road in the near future, please consider taking some extra time to rebuild cairns between Miles 3.5 and 7.6. Or, if you're looking for a worthwhile volunteer activity, this would be a good way to give back to fellow Mojave Roaders and enjoy the satisfaction of helping others find the road. Building cairns goes more quickly with extra helping hands; be sure everyone has a sturdy pair of work gloves.
If you do rebuild any cairns in this section, whether it's one or twenty, please let us know at info@mdhca.org so we can mention your good deed in the Mojave Road Report. Be sure to tell us the date you rebuilt the cairns and the names of everyone in your group who participated. We’ll be checking the rest of the Mojave Road east of Lanfair Road in the coming weeks, so if we find additional stretches without appropriate cairns we’ll send out another announcement.
Thank you for your continued support.
Best,
Hugh Brown, Executive Director
