My son just picked up his first vehicle. Now he has to get his learners permit so he can drive it. we are going to have fixing it up. it is stock high and has a valve tick oil pressure is good. What do you think fix the engine first or get a lift kit?

Fix engine first. Lift won't do any good if you can't drive it any where. Congrates to your son.

Fix it. $20 bucks in parts and about 1 hr in your driveway but then again a lifter tick never broke down an engine in my experience.

Jeep 4.2 and 4.0 have normal lifter noise. How many miles. Sometimes just flushing out the engine and running new oil can cure this. If it hasn't been running in a while I suggest running it on the freeway and letting it get hot might free up the lifter.
If none of that works, then you might have a bad lifter. This is not an hour job to replace. It requires removing the head to change the lifters. If you decide to do this I suggest replacing all the lifters, Also I suggest replacing all the head bolts and make sure you get the right head bolts for your engine. Yes there are different ones for different years and serial numbers. You will also need to make guide pins for the head to replace it. Use 2 of the old head bolts and cut off the bolt heads then slot the top of them so you can remove them later with a screw driver.

Thanks for the input it was my brothers jeep and the valve problem was there when he bought it. I was planing on replacing all the lifters. it also needs a steering box has a dead spot in the steering witch I believe is in the box. I plan on having lots of fun with my son on this project.
