Amateur, hobbyist, professionals? I work full time for an airline, but also run a photography business on my off time. Mainly portraiture and fashion work, but have started to shoot a lot of landscapes and such to sell. I've had my 7 year old grand daughter with us since she was 2, and she is also an avid photographer. (as well as a want-to-be model)

So any way... I'll start this with sharing a few photos and you guys feel free to jump in. :D

I shoot airshows:

Some fashion work in and around some ghost towns:

That's only about 25% of what it used to be ...

Last June I quit my website after more than a decade and took it down. Within a month there was a lot of clamor to reinstate it. To appease the public, I gave the 4x4 trails portion of the site to my host for his own use and wrote myself out of the site (although all the photos are mine); thus what is there is that portion only.

The site used to have a section of my trips over the decades, a page of automotive test mules I used to regularly see on the Death Valley area roads, my hunting trips (focus on the scenery, history, adventure - no dead animals), historical topics and more.

David,
I started looking at your work more closely and started reading many of your contributions to the Desert USA website. Quite honestly I have been inspired. I want to plan out a trip for the fall of this year retracing some (or most) or your 1999 Death Valley trip. I can't explain the near obsession I feel with photographing many of the places you visited. Not that I think I could necessarily do it better than anyone before, but because I feel so a draw to these pieces of American History.

I grew up in South Carolina and was always intriqued with it's revolutioanry war and Civil War history. I visited many of the battlefields and museums, but sadly never documented those visits either on paper or photographicly. Now that I am out here and havs started exploring the desert more and more, I just want to do it more and more.

Perhaps I can get an interest from some of the other members who are more experienced that would like to get involved. My wife doesn't really like to camp out, so I'd more than likely be on my own otherwise.

Thanks again,
Nick

Nick always post up any trip if you don't want to go by yourself - you never know who is looking to get some dirt time. DV is awesome - I have been all over that place and there are many more miles to explore - its huge.

Will do! If I do a long trip it will be in the fall. I don't think I can get everything together before summer. When we moved back to Vgeas from Florida I sold every bit of my camping gear. :(

Unless you prefer extra comfort while camping, simple gear won't cost a lot. Spend the time until your trip arrives by perusing thrift shops, yard sales and the like. Many who are out of work likely are ridding themselves of great stuff to help make ends meet.

Since you read my DesertUSA article, you saw the photo of how I camp. I've spent many good nights simply holed up in the back of my 1996 Chevrolet S-10 4WD pickup and my current 2002 Toyota Tacoma. An air mattress and a good sleeping bag do fine. Or a backpacking sleeping pad. My cooking equipment consist of a simple, old style Coleman white double burner gas stove and some old kitchen utensils and cast iron fry pan. Plastic totes keep supplies and my clothing clean and ready for use. That's all. Cost was negligible and time consumed in preparation is zilch. Fun and enjoyment exploring? Priceless.

Thanks David. I'll look at some of the thrift stores. I think minimalist camping will work fine. For the most part it will just be me. I'll take the 7 year old along once I have seen the area and feel safe enough for her to come along, and that will more than likely be limited to regular campgrounds. My wife did enough camping and rock hounding as a kid that she really doesn't care for it any more.

I'm looking at adding a mil surplus trailer to pull behind the FJ as a camping vehicle as well. We'll see how it all works out. I'll keep you posted as the plans come togther a little better.

Nick if you want some awesome photos you should look into joining me on the Toroweap campout. There are some unbelievable views of the Grand Canyon and they make for some great photos.
Check the Camping section.
Google Toroweap and you will get an idea of the place.

That looks like fun! I'll keep that in mind if I can get some vacation time. I am the 2nd most senior guy in the maintenance department at the airline I work for, have 4 weeks of vacation, and due to some man power shortages they have cancelled all vacation requests "until further notice"
