Post subject:  Identify a trail?

We went up to Mt Charleston this wekend. On the way up, on Kyle Canyon rd, there is an unmarked trail that turns off to the RIGHT, just a few miles before Harris Springs Rd. It goes up a steep incline then tops on a nice plateau, but the trail continues on across the desert and it looks like into the mountains. We didn't have time to drive it all the way out. Any ideas which trail this is?

I shot this right after we turned around and headed back out:

It looks like a fun one to run!

<edited for correct directions>

It could be Grapevine Springs.Page 72 of Mitchell's Great Basin Vol.1 Grapevine starts about 9 mi. up Kyle from 95 about 50 yds past a concrete bridge and eventually comes out in Lucky Strike Canyon. It will take you back to 95. I think that's the run your talking about.

That sounds about right! Will that lead to the Lucky Strike mine as well or at least to within hiking distance?

Thanks!

Nick: In the NV Benchmark Atlas it shows it does go up to the mine, although I've not made it there myself

I'll look at my Benchmark tonight when I get home then. I think I'll try it out in a few weeks. Looks like rain this weekend. :|

If my memory is working this morning the drive up to the mine can be a little challenging for some but that was many years ago

I did try coming up the trail from the Corn Creek end a month ago and ended up on a muddy hill that I could not get up. I eventually managed to back down until I could turn around. Looking at Google maps these two trails "may" converge at some point near the peak at Lucky Strike Road.

If nothing else, maybe I'll just post up before I head up there and see if anyone wants to tag along. :D

Nick: On my Garmin Base Camp program, there is a road that starts in the Hilltop campground off of Hiway 158 and it looks like it comes pretty close to the Lucky Strike Mine and eventually comes out on 95. The campground is at 8200 ft. so i'm thinking it's closed. The mine might be accessible after some of the snow melts.

That trail is Grapevine Springs. It's a really nice trail in the spring when the wild flowers bloom.

The road from 95 & Corn Creek is the one usually used to do the Angle Peak trail. The road to Lucky Strike turns off of it, and the road from Grapevine ties into it. Last time I did Lucky Strike, it was passable, there are no real hills to climb to get to it. At least to the main camp site anyway. Not much there, the main site had a nice cabin that someone knocked down :( and there are numerous shafts and exploritory adits. The road does continue past the main camp and up to more shafts that have been imploded, not much to see.

There are numerous roads in the area where the roads intersect so it's easy to take the wrong one.

IIRC Tom, Beth and Rex did it from 95 back to Kyle Canyon a few years back, I never made it through myself due to wash outs but have always wanted to go back.

Gary: I followed the Lucky Strike Rd out of the campground off 158 on Goggle Maps and came across a football field up there. Do you know anything about it?

Like Gary said: A few of us ran it from 95 to Kyle Canyon a couple of years ago. It was doable, but there were a few severe drop offs. A little scraping of the skid plates, but that's what they're for!

That's the Spring Mountain Youth Camp at Angel's Peak. The football field is used by the Spring Mountain Golden Eagles football team.

Sounds like an idea, Frank! When I ran it from the 95 end, there was a small parking area and some benches and a fire pit on the left about 10 miles up the trail.

I think I'll try it from the Kyle Canyon end in a few weeks. Looks like rain again this weekend, so I won't chance getting buried in the mud.
