I was thinking of getting a small portable air tank to carry in the jeep for airing back up. Right now I am using a portable harbor freight air compressor that works ok. My brother in law helped me mount it under the hood, which is nice but now it is already hot before I use it so being it is so small the compressor struggles to air up the tires.

this looks low priced and effective

opinions are needed

thanks

They work fine, but the issue is you have to have them really full, at least 125 PSI or more. So if you have a good compressor at home you could probably get it up there. When we ran air (before nitrogen) in our race cars, we could go all night with a full one, though we were usually just topping off a few pounds here and there. But if you're only going back up 10-15 pounds for four tires, it might be doable.

I think I still have my 5 gallon tank from my racing days, I shall have to look though. If I do, I'll sell it to you cheap, say $10. IIRC it was never used since I had an air compressor at hand when I raced.

Worse case I can let you use it to test it out at home before you use it on the trail to see if it works.

Just tossing this in here.

A used small SCUBA tank, filled with standard air (any place that sells paintball supplies can fill it) to its capacity works fine. A buddy of mine had the tanks (he's a SCUBA enthusiast) and keeps a small cylinder in his Tacoma. It generally gives him about 8-10 fills and then he runs to a local hardware store for another recharge (I think it's 3000 pounds) for a minimal price ($10?).

Me, I've found that my BFG All Terrains take 55-65mph at 15psi with no appreciable heating, even in summer. So I just come on home if I'm on 2-lane roads for up to 50 miles and fill up my tires with my shop compressor and 100' of hose. This has worked fine with no visible adnormal wear, no failures and I'm 50k miles into my tires and they're still at 50% tread. Otherwise, I just use my 12v air compressor (truck tire rated), my 12v power pack and wait for them to take my tires from 15psi to 35psi.

I use a SCUBA set up.
Talk to the guys at

AAI-Neptune Divers , Las Vegas
5831 E. Lake Mead Blvd.
Las Vegas, Nevada
702-452-5723

They are offroad friendly and price for used gear depends on availability but should run about $150. This is a 2000psi steel tank.
He labels the tank so that you do not have to be a diver to get filled at his shop but all inspections have to be kept up to date(2&5years i think). His fill fee went up from $5 to $6 due to electric rates.
