HELP!!!! It looks like my rear seal is leaking. :( I'm sure others have had this problem. Any suggestions? It's an 03 and out of warranty, so I don't want to take it to the dealer. John

Excuse me, but Jeeps don't have leaks, they MARK their territory.

Rubi is starting to mark her territory just like Goldie is doing. So I am also interested in finding out the solution.

Did mine myself, twice thus far. It seems like mine started doing it every 45K miles or so. Jodi's is doing it just now and her 05 Jeep has 63K on it. I ordered an oil pan gasket for $34.06 and a rear main seal for $13.61 from Mopar Parts It is not too hard to do if you know how to wrench. The only really special tool you need is a Torque Wrench to torque the rear main bearing cap, the main bearing strap, and the oil pan back on. Here is a great article that you can use to follow from MoabJeeper Magazine - Rear Main Seal Article It is informative and has some pretty good pics to follow. If you decide to do it and need the torque specs, let me know. I have the service manual for my 02 Jeep. I'm sure the specs are the same.

When my Jeep started leaking the first time, I called the dealership and they quoted me $600 to do the job. I went to the parts store and got the parts and saved the money for other things. The hardest part is getting the exhaust out of the way. A little PB Blaster on the bolts helped quite a bit. Once it's out of the way, it's really easy.

Good Luck!!!

Pardon me....

If that's the case, Goldie is "marking her territory" all over my driveway. :x

Yeah, and that was about 3 years ago. I can't imagine how much they'd want now. If you do it yourself, just take your time and put everything back together the way it came off...pay attention to the direction the main bearing cap came off and put it back on the same direction. Oh, and use a small wooden dowel or somthing similar to push the old seal out from around the block's half of the seal. You certainly don't want to scratch or damage any part of where the seal sits.

Just know that sometimes the new seal will leak a little before it stops leaking all together, and then sometimes it will keep leaking. I've been told by a few people that it is hit or miss when you change them out. I use full synthetic oil, and the molecular structure is smaller than convention dino oil, so it will have a tendancy to leak a little easier with full synthetic. That is another issue, in itself. But I still prefer full synthetic over dino oil.

Thanks Joe... I'll remember that. Right now I'm using Valvoline and have had good luck with it. John

If you don't want to do this yourself, take it to Dwayne's Automotive on Basic, just off Boulder Hwy. They do fantastic work and they guarantee it.

I used Dwaynes for another vehicle I used to have. I was happy with the service.

John are you sure it is the rear main seal? On my Jeep I thought the rear seal was leaking but it was just the pan gasket. Jeeps will leak at the rear of the pan gasket if it wasn't sealed correctly. Here is a good test to tell. Wipe off all excess oil from the area. run your Jeep for awhile. If the oil is coming from the Flywheel side of the bell housing then it is the main seal. If the oil is only on the outside front of the bell housing then it is just the rear of the pan gasket leaking.

If your lazy like me.....on your next oil change substitute one quart of oil with one quart of lucas oil stabilazer $9.99 at your parts store....mine had a mild leak as well it would leave a dime size spot in the garage.....did this and stopped the leak.... i also use synthetic oil mobil 1

SO $9.99 versus $600.00 :D

Oil leaks have become a problem. Here are two things that will help Synthitic oil is great, But it may be to Great, It is so good it will leak by the main seals. If the leak isen't to bad go back to regular oil and put in a good can of stop/leak, Make shure the stop leak label states that it will not harden the seals.

Jack this is a really old thread. We fixed John's oil leak awhile back. Turns out it was the pan gasket and not the rear main seal. :)
