okay folks, educate me.

there's a lot of opinions out there, and when I re-gear my front axle, it needs something in there for traction aid.

here is what I'm considering:

Detroit TrueTrac (gear-driven limited slip, no clutch packs to wear out, doesn't mess with steering)

Powertrax lock-right

Powertrax No-slip (no.1 on my list, even if it is more expensive)

Aussie locker

I'm simply not going to spend the money on a selectable so that's out of the question.

with all the various club members, these are all represented in the club, comments about these and how they perform are appreciated. thanks!

as you know i have powertrax no-slip's in both my axles and i am very happy with them. :D since i'm doing less hard wheeling and am moving to an area that gets snow in the winter if my rear locker ever breaks i would replace it with a gear driven posi and keep the no-slip in the front. i've wheeled with people that had lockers in the rear and posi's in the front and thay have almost all wished they'd done it the other way or were locked at both ends. jmho 8)

JJ,

After a lot of consideration, and some passenging in others' rigs, I am going in on Monday to have Truetracs put in front and rear with 3.73's. For MY driving style and demands, that seems to be the best idea. 8)

However, YOU have to make the decision of how you drive and what you want to do with your rig. If you really want to wheel it, and see Moab as an interesting afternoon, then go for double lockers.

If you want to be able to wheel on weekends and DD the darn thing to Mt. Charleston in the winter, then you might want to consider my set up. :)

Lockers can be tricky in no traction situations. They may not UNLOCK to let you turn (dump trucking) if there isn't enough traction, like snow, moondust, or soft sand. I seem to remember Frog trying to winch someone off a tree from a snow situation. I don't know if lockers were a cause, but you can see the danger.

If you are in a position to wait for a bit, then you are welcome to see how my Truetracs F/R drive. I also suggest you drive rigs similar to what you want to do, and see what they have to offer.
:D

That just what I have to say, take it for what it cost you.

Travis

Of course you're going to get a variety of opinions on this.

I had Adams install a truetrac in the front and it did make a difference while maintaining street manners.

Worked well in Moab too. Sometimes a little feathering with the brakes but not too bad.

haha, Travis, Frog was helpign get ME unstuck off that tree.

lockers weren't the issue in that, I was open with a posi in the rear, I just made a stupid choice to push on when it looked and felt like I get through.

I have run into a few situations where a locker up front would have helped.

honestly, I don't run into much snow here, and doubt I ever will again :-)

I never see any mud, soft sand, yes, and that is a concern, but if I hit a rocky path, I want to be able to go right over it...point and shoot sort of.

Check out the OX lockers if you want a selectable locker. We've had real good luck with them and they are really good on warrantying their product.

since my 8.8 has an open diff I will go ahead and change that out. so, doing that I'm having 4.56s put in.

it's either no-slips or true tracs front/ rear.

I am actually leaning toward the truetracs 95% because I have to be honest and say that I have little to no use for rockcrawling and, yes, a locker would help, but I haven't really had many issues....ever....not getting where I wanted to go.

more than a few people have told me good and bad about the TrueTrac limited slips, like they lock up real tight when you need them to, but they do slip. okay, but honestly, I'm not in many situations where tires are getting lifted and spinning wildly.

my Jeep is basically where I've always wanted it to be clearance-wise and tire-wise. I just had a Dana 35 limiting me. not, that is not an issue.

I don't have the cash flow to do selectables f/r and that leaves auto-somethings, and since I'm not real willing to sacrifice daily driving street driveability, that leaves one option. Tires wear faster with auto lockers, too.

just hope I don't regret it.

Save your old parts. If you don't like your results go back to square one and begin again. Ebay is a great place to sell parts. My 2 cents.

I'll keep whatever parts I can and donate some to club kitty, too, if possible.

JJ,

Got my TJ back with the Truetracs installed. In all honesty, I thought they had screwed me and charged me a "lot" of money and not put anything in. It is seamless. But, if you lock it into 4 low, and do donuts in the street.... you hop like mad, and leave a large skid mark from the front tire. So, I know they are in and working. I have noticed a VERY slight moan from the diffs when I make a tight turn (into a side street with oncoming traffic). But otherwise, they act like they aren't even there. 8)

That being said, if you would like to try my rig out and see what you think, I am always willing. (But I will be out of town this weekend.)

drop me a PM and we'll get together if you like.

Travis

went from being open front and back to lunch box front and back.
poor turning radius on pavement, lotsa banging in parking garage at work getting into the LAST parking space. made a few people take cover wondering what car bomb went off.
dirt was easier climbing than spinning when open.
now i have an electric/select detroit in back diff with 4.56 gears. still lunch boxed in front.
nice change, can turn sharper on streets and dirt is a new revelation.
dirt is much better.
so JJ ,we have to run potato or wheeler when you get the Yeti-Jeep up and running.

I'm gonna have to pop for a tire carrier, too. probably go with the Bestop one like Rubicon Bob has on Rubi. seems like the best option for me after much head scratching and wallet emptying.

I'll get a rear bumper later.

yeah, beth, this no dirt thing is the pits.

I live MUCH closer to work now so I'm saving a TON on gasoline.

the hills are not too much farther off.
