Hey i am the newbie with the red jeep this past weekend on the fun run. Now my engine light has come on, shouldi panic? And when I turn sharp I hear a loud noise.

Anybody got any ideas?

I don't have anybody else to ask except you awesome jeep people...grin.

Go to Autozone. They can pull the code for free and tell you what the issue is. If it a generic reading, bring the code back and we can tell you what the issue is.

The engine light came on in my jeep twice - first time I didn't have the gas cap on all the way. Easy fix, but it took a while for it to go off again (3-4 start ups, I guess.) The other time was when I stupidly put in a tank of E-84 gas. Yikes! After a tank of proper gas, I then detached the battery cable for a few minutes to reset the computer ~ then the engine light went off.

Good Luck!

lucy beat me to it. :o most of the time with a newbie the first "check engine light" is just after you fill it up and don't get the gas cap back on tight. screw it down tight until it clicks a couple times. it has to do with the emissions control stuff and the system needs to be sealed and pressurized or the light come on. as for the loud noise when you turn, it could be something loose after the thumping your jeep got last saturday  or it could be normal and you're just not used to the "jeep noises" yet. you'll need to get with one of the club mechanics and have them drive it to make sure it's nothing out of the ordinary. 8)

You can try to read the trouble code yourself. Check here http://www.nevadabackroaders.com/v-web/bulletin/bb/viewtopic.php?t=1030 for details.

took the jeep to auto zone run the test, came back oxgen sensor.

Did the gas cap thing, light went off for awhile but came back on. Guy at Auto Zone said it was easily fix, and that my daughter and I could probably replace the sensor, is that true?

Thanks,

Marla

Shouldn't be a problem as long as you have some tools and elbow grease.
It's just an unplug, remove, replace and plug in kinda job under you jeep.

Hi Marla,

I just had to replace four of them on my Isuzu Trooper. It's not real technical but it can be a challenge depending on where it is located. If you've never picked up a wrench, you might want to have someone "co-pilot" you while you change it out.

Let me know if none of the guys offer to help you. I broke down an bought a code reader a few weeks ago (that's how I found out my 02 sensors were bad) so we could check the codes again after changing out the sensor.

You'll find the O2 sensor screwed into the exhaust pipe, just below where it joins up to the exhaust manifold (the many-branched pipe that attaches to the engine block). As Justin said, unplug the electrical harness, unscrew the old sensor, screw in the new sensor and plug the electrical harness back up. They can be tough to remove, so it might help to run the engine until it reaches operating temperatures before trying to remove the old sensor...but this will add a burn danger to the one underneath working on the engine. After you've replaced the old sensor with the new one, you'll also need to reset the emission maintenance timer. If your Jeep is '91 or later, then you'll need to pick up a special tool from the auto parts store to do this. Then, you can either take your Jeep to the dealership to have them reset the dash light, or you can disconnect the battery and "reboot" the computer to get it to go out.

We're going wheeling tomorrow morning, but let me know if you need any help with this, I'll be happy to lend a hand. Cell: 409-599-9408

Suggestions from Korea...Turn the check engine light off...

I'm just playin' but the O2 Sensor things sound right. If I was there I would be more than happy to help you with that. But I'm too far away now. But I will be in Vegas next year around the end of Mar early Apr. SO for everyone else, prepare for us coming back....

Andy is not the problem. You have to keep a constant eye on Sheila.
