One resource for those who are as frugal/thrifty/cheap as Uncle Buck is the 99 Cents Only store. A recent foray to this emporium of delights yielded:
Cell Phone Headsets (slightly cheesy, but work OK);
Bungee cords: not as cheap as Harbor Freight, but a lot closer to drive;
Cigarette lighter cords (for your CB, GPS or whatever you power from your cigarette lighter outlet);
Chinese voltmeters: OK, they aren't FLUKEs, but for 99 cents you can throw one in your trail box and KNOW about your battery, alternator, etc;
and, my favorite,
Locking Bicycle Cables!
The locking cables are 750 MM long, have two keys each, and are just the s***s for securing stuff to the roof rack. Might even keep my newly-acquired (on eBay) 30X9.50 locked to the top of the GC, although a decent set of bolt cutters might defeat them. But then, anyone who had the presence of mind to steal a big set of bolt cutters first is gonna get your whole Jeep anyway...
At 99 cents each, versus $9+ from a bike shop, two of these (they are "daisy chain-able") can be pretty handy. You have to cull them to get two Keyed Alike, but they're worth the trouble.
OK, laugh if you want, but I drink Diet Shasta cola, too.
For Jay Leno, 99 Cents Only is a punchline. For ME, it's an alternate source of small things that Pep Boys and AutoZone mark up pretty heavily...
