So many Doodads so little time. Anyone have any tips on GPS and onboard air for someone who knows little about either?

I think I'm leaning towards under the hood air rather than a tank as I never air down low enough to need to reseat a bead....Knocking on wood.

As far as GPS I know I'd like the ability to save maps of my own runs, otherwise I tend towards simplicity rather than bells and whistles. Money is not a huge barrier.

Not looking to take your time up on in depth analysis but would appreciate any input.

Thanks

Hi Brian & Michelle,

Ahhh...the typical questions of an off-road enthusiast!
In the "General Discussion" board, you will find some of these conversations:

Discussion about on-board air (tanks)
http://nevadabackroaders.com/ipw-web/bu ... .php?t=946

Discussion about GPS:
http://nevadabackroaders.com/ipw-web/bu ... .php?t=960

I think we have ALL wondered about that stuff!
Happy Hunting & Welcome to the Boards...

Lucy

Bflag, if you are looking for a gps unit here is a link to a gps dealer. I bought my gps from them and they have very good prices. You can buy online or go to their store in Vegas. Most of their business is done online, but if you have to have it now go to their store. They give the same prices at their store as online.

I need, well, want  , a GPS in order to save my own routes.

been trying to get an older Magellan so I can swap files with others in the group, but I have no luck on eBay, so I'll just get a brand new one, and save trails as I go along.

Here's a Good Article on GPS's.

I have a Garmin Etrex Vista C and I like it because it is small enough to take hiking or kayaking and it works awesome in my Jeep, too. They don't make that model any more, but they did upgrade it to the Vista Cx model which uses removable memory cards. Since I alway download my runs on my computer, I've never run into a problem with not enough memory. If you want more info on different GPS's, click HERE.

As far as the OBA, I have a viair 450c 100% duty cycle mounted under the hood and a 2.5 air tank underneath my Jeep. I use it for my ARB air lockers and as a backup if I run out of CO2.

I prefer CO2 over the compressor only because it is so much faster when filling up from 8-10 psi to 29 psi. If you don't air down that low, a good compressor should be just fine. A lot of club members have the portable ones you just clamp on the battery and use, and that works good, too.

JJ, I have a Garmin eTrex Vista CX It is portable and has a color screen. A very nice hand held unit with expandable memory. I have 1 GB cards for it which hold about 3/4 of the US TOPO maps and All of the US city maps plus memory to spare. It works great in my Jeep too, with the cigarette lighter adapter and the windshield mount. I bought all this at GPS city.

They are local in Las Vegas. Good prices on everything too.
PS if you buy a Garmin unit and you would like the US TOPO maps let me know and I will burn you a copy of them free. Just buy the blank CD's (3 required) and that will save you $90 (the cost of the TOPO map CD's)
I did this for AL and they worked great.
