This is a new run, in and around the El Dorado Mountains west of Nelson.

The trip will go up Western Road, take a stop at the Carnation Mine, continue up what my GPS calls the Nelson bypass road, eventually turning north-west and snaking through the mountains, finally hooking up with the power lines and coming back to route 165.

Besides the Carnation Mine, we'll be passing several other mines, and perhaps stopping at one or two. The scenery is terrific, with a great diversity of cacti, including teddy bear cholla. There are also some wonderful views, especially for those willing to take a steep, but short hike at one of the spots we will stop.

The road is easy, probably not even requiring 4wd most of the way. There are a few very brief technical spots, just to make things interesting. I'd rate the trail a 1.5, maybe pushing a 2 on a couple of the hardest technical spots.

This is a short run, and we will be done well before dark.

The date is Saturday, April 13. We will meet at the Highway 95 turnoff to Nelson (route 165) at 9:00, and roll at 9:30.

Any weekend except 20/21 is good for us. We are in northern California then.

I have set the date as Saturday, April 13. We will meet at the Highway 95 turnoff to Nelson (route 165) at 9:00, and roll at 9:30.

If we are lucky, we will be joined by Donna and Gale Andress. They are long-time residents of Nelson, and have extensive knowledge of the area. They are also just wonderful people.

This sounds like one for me. I'm going to try to make it. Also, I have a friend here that is interested in seeing the "other side of Nevada". New here from Michigan. He has an 'all wheel drive' Ford Escape,, do you think he could make it in that ?? If not, he and his wife can ride with me... I really need to get out in the dirt,, it's been far to long.. Phil

I'm not familiar with the capabilities of a Ford Escape, so I really can't say. Maybe some other folks can chime in on whether it could make it?

I suppose we could always give a demonstration of winching.... :D

That run is great fun, and if Gale and Donna are on the run, everyone should come just for that wonderful experience! What awesome folks!

Chris and I will be there... :D

An "all wheel drive" Ford Escape was mentioned. I could be wrong, but from my experience some A.W.D. vehicles don't have a transfer case and so no low range. They should be able to make most if not all the club runs, but may have problems on the more difficult ones where low range is needed for power,

But I really hope they come out and have some fun with us.

Low range should not be necessary for this trip.

Thanks guys,,, I'll let him know... He and his wife are excited and want to see some of Nevada that they can't see from the 'strip'.. The time time frame will give them time to get time off from work.. Looking forward to a great day in the dirt... Phil

Hi Folks,

This run is still 'on', but sadly, we will not be joined by my friends Donna and Gale Andress. They have a competing commitment which takes precedence. Still, it will be a great day. Hope to see you all there.
