Where:Leave from Alamo, NV and head to the ghost town of Delamar and 2 other nearby sites, returning to Alamo.
Meet:8:00 AM, roll at 8:30 AM Saturday 10/27/12. Meet at the Great Basin Foods and Sinclair Station in Alamo, NV. It's 91 miles from Las Vegas on US 93. Take I-15 north like you are going to Mesquite or Utah and take exit 64, which is the next exit after Apex (exit 58). It will be marked with town names like Alamo, Ely, Caliente, Great Basin Park. There's a Love's Truck Stop on the west side of the highway. Figure about a 1 1/2 hour drive from this exit if you drive the speed limit (70). The Sinclair and grocery store has just about anything you might need if you forget anything.
Trail:About 80% of it is graded or well traveled two track, with the road into Delamar and one of the cemeteries being a slow, rough (rocky) road. It's a solid 2, pushing an easy 2.5 rating, mainly from the flood washouts and the rocky road. We'll head out of Alamo and pass by the Point Black petroglyphs at Delamar Dry Lake, then head to the town site of Delamar and both (yes they had 2) cemeteries. From there we'll hit the remains of Helene and loop back to an un-named mine site before heading back to Alamo. Wild horses, Antelope, deer and the usual free range cow are all possible photo ops as well. As always, bring lunch and other necessities. Plan on dressing in layers as it will be cooler than Vegas, but depending on the weather it might still be into the 80's come the afternoon. Then again, snow might be a strong possibility too. We'll make a loop, so you can plan on coming back through Alamo on your way home if you need gas. The trail will be about a 40 mile loop.
Oh, and for the peanut gallery, there's an ice cream shop in Alamo now. So ice cream is an option for the ride home
I'll put up another post with info for lodging/camping for anyone interested.
