Trail: Wheeler Pass
Date: 6/27/09
Trail leader: JJ
Rating: 2
Meeting time: 8:30AM
Roll out: 9:00AM
Meeting Place: Hwy 95 & Cold Creek turn-off (Indian Springs Prison turn-off)

This is an easy trail. Although, there will be an optional side trail for those interested. This side trail is harder, maybe 3-3.5. Vehicle damage is a possibility. Remember, this side trail is optional.

Sorry JJ, to much dirt and to many air cleaners for me.
The air cleaner cost cuts into my Fat Tire money. 8)

Bob, what side trails are you talking about here?

just the lower roads, or the road at the actual pass that goes farther up the hill?

The low road going into Wheeler Well. The high road goes through the burn area.

I just did the low road last Sat. I found a dirt way from where the club run ended to Cold Creek. Decided since I was there might as well go over wheeler....

I'd say the low road is a 2.5 at the most. It is narrow so if your wider than a jeep you might get some new pinstripping and there are a couple tight turns that would give a long vehicle a bit of a challenge.

Good tires are recommend and a little clearance would be a good thing to have as well.

Question:

Is this a double-traverse, or are you returning to the Vegas side via highway?

going all the way into Pahrump.

lunch spot will be at that campout area with the guzzler for the horses.

and I must have ice cream at the end before the trek home.

I suppose anyone could turn back at the pass if they wanted to go back home early. I don't see anything wrong with that.

is the optional descent into the wheeler well area doable?

when i went over in late march I went up to trough springs

I havent done the optional decent since fall.

The road on the upper ascent is startign to erode a bit more.

a couple good rains and it will make for a more interesting section

I'll try to make it .

Can you be a bit more precise on the meeting location for those out of staters that have been lurking on here for a few years but never can seem to coordinate their trips to Las Vegas to coincide with one of the club runs? I'll be in Vegas 23 thru 27 June and I'm considering driving my Heep down there. Thanks

We are meeting at the Hwy 95 & Cold Creek turn-off. Cold Creek turn-off is where the Indian Springs Prison and High Desert Correctional Facility is located. This is a couple of miles before you get to the town of Indian Springs and Creech AFB. Since you will already be in Vegas, just take Hwy 95 north out of town. It is probably a good 30min north of town. You will be able to see the prisons from the highway. If needed, we will be on CB #4.

They cancelled my trip so I'm going to miss yet another one. Maybe I can catch you guys up in Ely, that's about half the distance.

Hey what would you rate Lovell summit/Canyon trail for difficulty on a 10 scale? I know that is an option to get back to Vegas when you exit Wheeler.
