Trail: Ibex Spring and Ibex Dunes
Date: 3/21/09
Meeting place: Tecopa turnoff and Hwy 160. The turnoff is approx. 17 miles from the top of Mtn Pass.

Meeting time: 8AM Roll @ 8:30.
Trail rating: 1.5

On the prerun, the wild flowers were just barely starting to bloom. We even found one type of flower that Brad didn't know. :? The bloom should be going good by the time of the run. of course there is the mining town of Ibex, Saratoga Springs and an optional trip to the mine.

I'm new enough to the area that "17 miles from the top of Mtn Pass" doesn't help me much when planning my departure time. Any way to get a GPS waypoint, google map, or something similar? Also, how long of a run is this?

Looking forward to my first time out with the group.

Thanks,
Richard

mountain pass is the "hump" you encounter when going over "the hump to pahrump" on SR160. SR160 is Blue Diamond Road at I15 and my mapping software says it is about 20 miles from I15 to mountain pass and as stated about another 17 miles from there to the tecopa/old spanish trail turn-off of SR160. if you live on the north west side of town you'd want to take Charleston/SR159 past red rock and blue diamond to where it intersects SR160 then head towards pahrump. given your driving and traffic i'd say 90 minutes would get you there in good time. from the meeting place to the trialhead it is about another 48 miles of old blacktop. the trail ends at california state highway 127 near dumont dunes and about 30 miles from baker california where gas is avalible and ice cream at the mad greek. or you can return to vegas the same way taken out there. i left blue diamond with a full tank, 20 gallons in jeep wrangler, and had a quarter tank when i got back to vegas. 8)

Elisabeth and I will not be there with our 97 ZJ.

Sorry after realizing the time frame I doubt we would make it back for a birthday party we need to be at so we wont be on the run.

Maybe next month

Is Furnace Creek close to where we'll be?

I'm thinking of camping overnight to break up the drive: http://www.nps.gov/deva/planyourvisit/upload/FCCG.pdf

from the end of the trail you'd go left on cal127 thru shoshone and death valley junction to cal190 to furnace creek. my mapping soft ware shows about 82 miles. 8)

Anywhere closer to where we'll be to camp out for the night?
It's a long day for the little guy in a car seat. Thought I'd break the trip up if I could and make a weekend of it.

we come out right near dumont dunes so you could camp there. i think there's a blm day use fee but i don't know what it is. and you'd be able to watch the atv & dune buggies play on the dunes. 8)

I'm not sure of the amount either. But, it is very reasonable. I think it is something like $20 for 5 nights. Plus, they at least have pit toilets.

$30 for a week with no holidays. If you are camping and only taking your jeep, you can take the trail before the pay station and camp on the trail up to the Western Talk Mine. It's a pretty nice trail the crosses Amergosa in a few places. It also follows the old T and T roadbed. Pretty nice area and it would be free.
