I'm gonna explore the Cottonwood Valley area tomorrow. Never been there.

I'll be at the gas station at the 159/160 split at 10am if anyone is going.

oh, it's an area off of SR160, just east of Mount Potosi, and it's mostly an extensive network of mountain biking trails, however, there is a bit of a Jeep trail in there, and forst service roads. I believe the trail ends up in Goodsprings.

I'll just be doing some exploring up that way.

hey thanks for coming Rex and Shirley...and yes, I should've posted this in the exploring section, because that's what it was.

it'll definitely be a true "fun run" next time I do it.

nice day of exploring Cottonwood Valley and Forest Service Roads in the shadow of Mount Potosi.

did anyone else, other than the Forest Service know about glyphs out there?
and what about that old house and cemetery?

Hey JJ. There are some glyphs up there. I don't remember exactly which trail it is, but I went out there exploring a while back when I discovered them.

If you take the main trail south, you will come to a hill that changes to a dark rust color and begins the Spring Mtn Recreation Area. Once you get to the top, take a right. You will go up to the top and slightly to the left, but more straight, you'll see a trail riding on the ridge of the mountain. Follow that all the way to the next trail. Before you get to the trail there is a go around that heads to the left. Remember it because you will be going that way a little later. Past that and on the next main trail, to right. You will come across 99 Mines on your left. Keep on that trail and follow it a little longer and you will come across an A-frame house.

If you follow the wash to the right of the house, that will take you to the trailhead to hike (an extremely difficult hike) to the Carole Lombard (wife of Clark Gable) airplane crash site. After exploring the A-framed house, you can head back past 99 Mines and pick up the cut off trail I mentioned. Follow that and every time you see a trail that leads to the right toward the mountain, take it. Some of them go to mines and I believe it is on one of them, I discovered the glyphs. You will have to turn around and get back to that main side trail.

If you keep heading that way eventually you will be back on the main trail, Cottonwood Valley Road, and it will take you to Goodsprings. I believe the trail number is 800. The trail on top where you would turn right is trail 800A if I remember correctly. The trail that it connects to I believe is trail 800C. They all lead back to trail 800 in an East South/East sort of way. I'm trying to paint you a picture so you feel as if you were there but are discovering it all a new. I hope that helps you out some.

I posted some pics of the glyphs. They had a sign pointing them out the last time I was there. They are on the left hand side as you are heading toward the mountain.

Wait, I remembered that I tracked the whole thing with my GPS and the first off shoot after 99 Mines is Dawn Mine. Once you get to that turnoff, go about 3.2 miles there is a Y and stay right. The first right turn after the Y approximately .2 miles will take you to the glyphs which are approximately 1.9 miles once you make the right on that trail. I hope you get this before you leave. It should help you see some really cool things that I've discovered exploring that region. :D

Have fun. If I was off, I'd show you around, but unfortunately I have to work.

thanks Joe for your input!

we did road 800. I remember getting around somewhere, 800E I think, and having to turn around. There have been some rains up there and some relatively significant washouts.

This road was actually two levels, meaning you come up to a BIG rock that you have to get over to get to the next part of the road. 33" tires at least.

Anyway, I didn't want to attempt it, so we turned around.

anyways, now I can go back and know a little bit more about that area.

really fun day.
