That's funny you mention Bitter Springs, Tim. Rubicon Rob and I were thinking of running Bitter Springs after we looked for a mine he found on Google. We were thinking about meeting at Petro off exit 54 around 8 am and departing at 8:30 am to go look for the mine and after that, trail up to Bitter Springs. I still have to map it out, but it should be no problem if others want to tag along or not. Not sure if we will find what we are looking for, but we're going to look none-the-less.

I15, is also 93, right? :?

If 93 & 15 are the same at exit 54, :? exit 54 is near Apex, the Speed Way, Las Vegas Blvd. and Nellis Dunes? Now if that is true where/what is Petro? :?:

Joe, I happen to be off on Saturday, so I will go. I love that area and need to go wheeling...and maybe around Bitter I can find this Dickie's Exit thing a few people talk about.

is that start time definite?

Petro is the truck stop at the speedway. It has a decent little greasy spoon, fuel and a large parking lot.

May have to work Sat, I'll check in later.

Sounds like fun, we will try to make it. We became grandparents on New Year's Day and not quite sure if the new little one will be home from the hospital by then. :D

Need to go so I can try out my new OX locker....got tired of the old Detroit...wasn't fun to drive on the street. See ya all at the Petro. The Park Ranger ain't gonna be chasing us down is he?? If he does, I don't know any of you guys!!

Howdy Jeepin'
Can't make the run, but when you hit dirt it's 5 miles to the "pocket" intersection. If you went south for grins & giggles, at the intersection that is the remains of the "Old Arrowhead Trail" otherwise known to gringos as the 'Old Spanish Trail'. The road skits along the flank of the Buffington's Pocket Fold and it ends in a two track among rocks that seem to form a natural box canyon called Colorock Quarry. Along the "pocket fold" are short trails that empty into old sandstone quarries every once in awhile heading east(interesting little side trips). The Old Arrowhead Trail runs there for 40 miles into where the new garbage dump is now and the road is blocked. If you could finish that trail it would end back to the "Apex Summit Rd." is located at. Back at the dirt intersection, if you was to turn north that road empties into Valley of Fire State Park and you need special permission to access the park. The official "Bitter Springs Trail" starts there at the intersection heading due east. As you start to wind into the fold there is a small place to stop that is marked by sign describing Buffington's Pocket, following that trail for about 100 yards there is the remains of an abandoned concrete dam and a couple of crumbling single story ruins of stone buildings(maybe), lots of vandalism there can also be found there for sure. Back to the trail. In less than 1 mile you start climbing over the "pocket" fold trail goes from a 1.5 to 3 rating in a hurry. I took my stock grand over it maybe 9 times(solo) since 2001. At the top of the fold you'll see off to the west an exposed fault line and a short hike there, if you bring a pick-axe or a geologists hammer after a little work you can dig out a nice sample of jasper. After that climb onto the fold the trail meanders for 21 miles(1.5 rating) through the middle of the Muddy's and ends at the pavement of North Shore Rd in the wash called Echo Bay Wash, which it you could follow it would take you right to Echo Bay south campground. Plenty of mines you'll pass like the Wyatt Silica Mine. When the road intersects with the Echo Canyon Wash the original Bitter Springs Tail turns south and then meets with the North Shore Rd at the Bitter Springs Overlook on the North Shore Rd. It is a beautiful trail and vistas seem to be everywhere. There are some spur tracks along the trail that take you to other silica mines(no gold mines). Those mines are plenty dangerous! Wish I could go and shoot photos of jeeps doing their thing, but can't.

gotta work saturday.
dickie's exit is a trail from an area where rock hounds find opals. it is down an arroyo and up the other side.
the last time i was on a jeep thrills/nv backrdr/"at your leisure" club run, a driver had to be strapped up and out as they were driving a stock jeep. justin and bill were the rescue rangers that day.
lockers will ensure that you will make it, or limited slip/posi track. it also depends on how tore up the last up hill part of the track is.
it is a true "blue sky" moment and hoping gravity doesn't fail you now.
take pictures.
