Some members asked me to lead a run in December since there is no club run.
The only day I can do it is Dec 27th.

Going to Cold Creek / Rattle Snake Canyon.
I can't promise wild horses, but all the times I've been on this run I've never been skunked for horse sightings.

We'll meet at the Las Vegas Piute gas staion / smoke shop north on U.S. 95 just past the Mt. Charleston turn off at the Snow Mt Exit.
Meet at 8:30. Leave at 9:00.

I thought it should be rated a 2, maybe 2.5.
Beth tells me it's a 3 because of one steep hill that exceeds the 2.5 rating grade perimeter.

Come on out and have some after X-Mas fun!

It would be my first "run" with an off roading group, but I have a good bit of experience off road while hunting and camping. I just got a 1998 Wrangler with 4wd, 30" tires, trac-loc rear axle, stock suspension... would I be capable of making this run?

you should do fine.
there is the decision factor you can have by watching the jeep in front and go-arounds if you decide not to follow a harder line.
come on and explore the possibilities.
the trail has been erroded by rain/elements/atv on 2 places. there is a spot that is off-camber due to trail breaking down. it can be by-passed.
you won't be left behind, and it is a great place to know as it is close enough to town yet the open spaces we all need for "mental health"
better that prozac.

thanks for the info.

2 more questions... About how long should the run take? Do I need a CB radio? (I plan on getting one, but haven't yet.)

i have a spare, will try to find it in the "black hole" of garage shelves.
the run can be shortened after cold creek as we have to cross the paved road to get to 2nd half.
give yourself about 6-ish hours depending on where we break for lunch.
bring layers as the weather is getting interesting.
after the smiley rock run out of sedona i have added a fleece sleeping bag liner and wool socks to my jeep gear for the unexpected geographically challenged events.
snow, lightening and sleet was NOT expected, yet next time....bring it on.

Hey !! Is this 'run' still on the burner ?? They've had 42" of snow and are expecting another 14 to 18" tonight !! Has anybody checked to see if we can even get up there ?? Sounds like it could be the 'ultimate' snow run.... Gary,, you're the expert,,, what's up ?? Phil

I only know about the roads with black stuff on them. All the trails I saw in Lee and Kyle yesterday were pretty packed with snow, so any trails might be not be doable past a point. Plus we got snow/sleet down to a pretty low elevation, and it's likely feezing, so ice might be another issue.

As long as you have chains or 4X, they'll let you on SR156, 157 & 158 if there's any bad weather. But the weather is suppossed to be good up there tomorrow, so that shouldn't be an issue.

Myself, I'll be getting tipsy at the lodge :mrgreen:

I was up Kyle Canyon Rd this afternoon to Harris Spring and the pavement was dry and totally clear of snow and ice. At harris spring itself there was a fair amount of snow but the trail had been plowed and there were 4x4s and I think even passenger cars climbing to the top of the hill. There were lots of people parked along the sides of Kyle Canyon rd blocking traffic, playing in the snow and using the hills on harris spring as a free ski resort. On top of the hill there were a few folks ridding atvs.
