buells2t (Mike) thought it would be nice to take a little dirt run tomorrow and I suggested that a great place to go would be the river. Elizabeth Wash? Burrow Wash? Aztec Wash? We have not decided for sure, but ultimately we will end up at the river for a picnic. It has been a while since I've been down that way, but typically the trail rates no more then a 2.

So - anyone who wants to go with us (and probably face a few turn arounds) meet up at Railroad Pass Casino at 8:30 and we will roll at 9:00. We should be back on blacktop by mid-afternoon.

It has been 6 weeks since I've been in the dirt, at least. I'm OVERDUE. Seriously. But not a JJ and Frog kind of overdue, like what they did up in the mountains (nice write up, JJ, in the NBR newsletter. I really visualized your adventure. Yikes!)

Sadly :-( I won't be able to make it. I'm up here in Minneapolis where the temperature has been rounded off to a nice even 0.
Have fun in the warm dirt.

The Teddy Bear Cholla was on the attack yesterday. I got a ball of it stuck in the sidewall of one of my tires. Stealth, pesky little buggers! (OK - I confess - I was enjoying the beautiful scenery so much I wasn't watching for them in the road!)

Great Day - great people - thanks, Mike, for arranging things and leading. Bill did a GREAT job as back door keeping us all together! Joe is a phenomenal spotter and did an awesome job of getting us up & down the rock waterfall. FUN!

Nice Pics, Lucy!!!

Here's those pesky Ninja Cactus that attacked your tire and got it good, and it wouldn't let go!!

Yeah, thanks to all who came out to enjoy the day and the fun. The Nelson area is so awesome and it was fun to explore some new territory as well as cover some areas that it's been a while since I was last there. And of course the rock waterfalls to end the day's fun.

Thanks Mike for leading and getting us out in the dirt for the day, Bill for making sure we didn't stray off and keeping us all together, and everyone in between. It was a blast.

Here are some of the pics from my point of view.

Lucy,

I was looking through the photos and was wondering what this run was rated? Towards the end of the album are photos of a pretty steep climb that my stock Trooper just wouldn't be able to make it up, so I was wondering the rating. It would give me a better feel for runs that I might be able to sign up for in the future.

Thanks!

Joanne

This photo gives me cold chills! When I was in high school there was a guy that I would hang out with. He bought himself an old military jeep and started fixing it up a bit. One day he dropped by the house to see if I wanted to take a ride in the old jeep. I jumped in and off we went, front window down and the wind in our faces. Now down in southern Arizona there are areas where the teddy bear cholla grows to 8 or 10 feet high, so they are big. As we are riding down a trail he decides to take off cross-desert. Next he decides to drive over one of those big cholla trees. You can probably see this coming, but he couldn't at the time. What he didn't realize is that we would drive THRU the cactus, not OVER the cactus. When it was done and over I had chunks of cholla stuck in my neck, chest and arm! Much to my chagrin, he made it through unscathed. Anyone familiar with cholla knows how painful it is to remove because the needles are barbed. Also because they are dirty, they often cause minor infection at the points of skin puncture. I looked like I had chicken pox for days!

At our 15 year class reunion we had a good laugh about the whole event, though he still felt bad about it. It's one of those memories that make life ineresting. I've been stuck and poked by about every type of cactus that grows in Arizona, but that was the worst with out a doubt!

Joanne

Well - Joe lead us on an optional side trail down Eagle Wash. A couple of the vehicles went up the hill to explore a mine instead since their vehicles risked damage to try this.

Personally, to me a run ain't a run unless I can get something rowdy thrown in there for fun. I love the scenic, too, so this type of run was perfect. I'm not sure what that little stunt would be rated - the rest of the trail was maybe a 1.5, but that obstagle? 3 or 3.5??? Opinions, guys?

I guess I would rate the obstacle a 3 to 3.5 depending on the line taken. A fairly stock vehicle with an experienced driver I feel could make it up (being a Jeep Wrangler or the like SWB). Mikes Geo did good on the way down with a little rubbing on the center but gravity helped there. We got him up far right with a little rock stacking just to give more clearance. I went up it without my lockers after I got the front tires on top. I had some tire slippage though. Lucy showed me up by driving right up it without even a squeek coming from her new tires. :P

there are many stock friendly trails in the lake mead national recreation area that will get you down to the water on both the nevada & arizona side. the n.r.a. runs all the way south to davis dam in laughlin so that makes for lots of trails. if you visit the allan bible visitors center, near the boulder city enterance, walk up to the desk and ask for the approved back country roads maps they'll be happy to give them to you. there are 4 maps in the set and best of all they're FREE!! :D i've spent years exploreing coves using these maps and still haven't visited them all. and since these are approved trails as long as you stay on trail you can't be fined for being out of bounds which can be a rather stiff fine. $$$$ and most of the trails i've run rate a level 1.5 to level 2 at the most. 8)
