I have seen several stories of this happening. This can also happen using a winch. That is a big selling point of using a synthetic winch line. There is little recoil if it snaps.

I know at least one of our members has seen a strap break. Fortunately, no damage or injuries occured.

Always follow safety guidelines when winching os strapping. It could save your life or the life of someone else.

I'm sure someone will post a link to the guidelines.

two 8' peices of 5/8 twisted nylon rope with and eye splice on one end and whipped or backspliced on the other used as safetys (affixing the metal fittings or strap independently to the vehicles on both ends) will solve Most of these problems.

also some sort of dampner between the vehicles somehow attached to the line could significantly slow down the breaking line. in a pinch you can tie your boots or a bundle of organic matter or even a rock to the line with your shoelaces.

Oh yeah I wanted to add that if you have to cross the tow line when it is slack step on it rather than over it. and yell out "stepping on the line". if it is anything but dead slack
*******GO AROUND!!!*******

And remeber in cases such as these one chief is magnitudes better than a dozen.

Chains can do the same. We recently had a crew trying to unstick a grader using a loader pulling on a 1/2" grade 70 chain. The chain snapped, sending about 5' of chain with a hook on one end through the back window, past the operators head, and out the front window of the grader.

It's amazing what a piece of carpet can do.
