After the Matterhorn run on Sunday, I stopped to air up my tires. No problem. I was finishing up my last tire. I shut off the compressor and I heard the sound of air leaking. I listened and tried to figure where it was coming from. I ran my hand around the sidewall and the sound changed. I thought for sure I had a small puncture in the sidewall due to the rock crawling that we did, but no, it was between the bead and rim. In my years of mounting tires for Sam's Club, I instantly figured since I was aired down to 12 psi, I probably came down hard on the trail somewhere and got a few small rocks between the bead and rim. I was right.

I could have taken the tire off the Jeep and used my hi-lift to break the bead just enough to remove the small pebbles. Since it was the end of the run, I chose to swap it out with my same-sized spare. I took it to work and fixed it. Here are a few pictures.

This one was the biggest culprit

After breaking it down a little more, I found all of these there, too

Blew the stones out of the bead, aired it back up, and it was fixed and ready for use.

Wow! that's weird. Haven't had that problem yet.

Good to know, though!

actually, it's quite common when you air way down. when tires are aired down to single digits i've even heard of small sticks getting in the bead and causeing the same issue joe had. the fix, if you want to call it that, is to come up a few psi when you air down. example if this happened at 12 psi, next time try 13 psi. you should find a place where the small rocks can no longer get into the bead as easy. 8)

I thought going down into such low pressures required bead locks.

I have stock size B.F. Goodrich All Terrain T/As on my Toyota Tacoma TRD. I run 35psi on the highway, 15-18 on the trail. I generally keep the front tires aired about 3-4psi over the rear to compensate for engine weight.

One thing I've done to try and prevent this is I broke the bead on the outside rim and coated the inside of the rim and the bead with black roofing tar. I don't recall the name of it, but it's the standard 12" caulk gun tube you can get at any Walmart, Lowe's HD, etc. Seemed to help during our 2008 Summer Desert Trip.
