Here's a question that we might have but don't really know the answer to. Maybe there isn't an answer, maybe it's simply opinion.

Snow chains ... mount them on front or rear?

In the old days, with my '70 Ford F-250 pickup with solid front axle, I regularly ran my chains on the front. Engine weight over the tires with chains aided traction and helped with directional control.

My '02 Toyota Tacoma TRD manual says place them on the rear.

No reason given, but I have a hunch that if you toss a chain to the inside, with IFS you'd tear up a lot of expensive parts in there. On a old solid front axle, leaf spring design, the worst you could do was tear up a brake line. Maybe there's just no clearance for chains with IFS front suspension. I don't know. I've had an expensive set of truck tire chains sitting in an ammo can in the back of my truck for the past eight years since buying the truck and have never broke them out to use them.

I'm a proponent of front mounting chains. However, with my Tacoma there is an advantage for use on the rear, I have a rear differential locker. That should make up for the lack of engine weight over the chained up wheels. The downside is that it still don't help, though, if the front end washes out in a turn.

some folks suggest running them on the front since that is where the steering is and most of your braking effect is . however on long steep decents you should have them on the back so the rear doesnt come around on you . most people suggest using 4 chains. it is a fact that fitment and attachment is critical on the front of 4wd ifs vehicles due to deep backspace on most stock rims toyota esp so. inasmuch you should take it slow refrain from making extemely tight turns and check them repeatedly.

On our last hunting trip in the Rubies we mounted chains on all four tires on the Tacoma, mild all terrains and stock otherwise. Drove slow and carefull on the trails. Only prob we had was a wood screw in a tire.

does the taco have the stock TRD wheels and tires on it ?
is it a sport model or an off road model
(does it have the hood scoop)

Stock wheels, Big O all terrains and no scoop. Not sure what year but is the 4 door. Uncle's truck in Overton.

but he is running the stock tire size right ? 265 70r16

stock or just a touch larger not sure what size exactly. :?
