Here is the original e-mail sent out by then Trail Boss Maxine Lantz annoucing the adoption of the cabin. Originally we used a monthly Official Club Run to do the once a year repairs but starting this year we will be making the repair party a part of the Nevada Backroaders July Weekend in White Pine.

WE GOT IT!!!!!

This afternoon, Barbara Walker of the USFS, Mac McCarty & I, Maxine of the Board met to work out the details for adoption of the Forest Service Cabin on Mt. Moriah, aka Dog Springs Admin Cabin. This is the cabin we requested adopting last year. Due to personnel and policy changes in the local office, acceptance took a bit longer than originally thought. But, through the efforts of Barbara Walker, the Recreational Forester, we will partner with the Forest Service to preserve and adopt the cabin.
The Forest Service will supplies the generator, paint, lumber, paint brushes and other materials as needed. They will have an archeologist and ranger to assist us.
We supply the labor and use our own tools - i.e. hammers, saws, etc. Mac (775-289-6798) will serve as the “TOOL GUY.â€￾ If you are bringing your own tools - great. If you think you will need a special tool, contact Mac (mlm@idsely.com) any way you want and we will try to make sure it is there for you to use.
Wes has generously cancelled his September run in Jefferson for our preservation day at the cabin. We have September 14 scheduled to meet at 7:30 AM, leave at 8AM at Majors Station (775-591-0430) at the Junction of Hwy 93 & 50 & 6 at the base of Connors Pass {C 6}. Our goal is to paint the cabin and outhouse to protect it from the winter and to make and needs list for Spring.
Majors Station has parking for RVs, there are campsites near the cabin for those who more outdoorsy. Pioche is 81 miles to the South of the junction and Ely is 26 miles to the East of the junction. Lodging is suggested for Ely : Elk Ridge Motel 775-289-2512, Ramada Inn 800-851-9526, Bristlecone Motel 775-289-8838 Lodging in Pioche: Overland Hotel 775-962-5895.

Mark your calendars and bring your smiles!!

Ok, Maxine's original e-mail doesn't give a lot of details about the cabin so here's goes some additional info. The cabin is a one room cabin with an outhouse on Mount Moriah in the North Snake Mountains. The Snake Range runs along the Nevada-Utah border and is split by US Highways 6/50. Great Basin National Park is in the South Snakes. There are a couple ranches that have allways run cattle and sheep on Mt. Moriah and the cabin was built for use by a USFS Ranger to monitor grazing activities and insure the area was not over grazed. The cabin is over 70 years old and with the development of the "grazing gauge" Rangers no longer needed to stay the season and the cabin was abandoned but continued to be used by ranchers, cowboys, hikers, and hunters. The cabin was in really bad condition and the USFS was basically going to let the cabin rot away. The Backroaders approched the USFS in 2001 asking to adopt the cabin and repair it. The USFS had a rule that after a certain number of years the cabin would be totally abandoned and we beat that time limit by 1 year. We've painted the cabin inside and out and replaced the "liberated" wood burning stove wiith one donated by a club member. The cabin is situated in a grove of Quakeing Aspen at about 9700 feet elevation and a short drive from the Mt. Moriah Wilderness which includes the Mt. Moriah Table which is one of the most pristine sub-alpine meadows in the lower 48 states. Today the cabin is still being used by ranchers, cowboys, hikers, and hunters and their messages of thanks to the club are written on a board inside the cabin put up for that very reason. Water, MRE's, canned foods, and toilet tissue have been left behind by grateful users.
