BLM is notifying the public of proposed actions affecting the trails behind Sunrise Mountain. Public comment period is from March 23rd to April 27th with a decision expected May 4th. Action expected to be implemented late summer 2009.
This action involves the Sunrise Mountains Instant Study Area and the Rainbow Gardens Area of Critical Eviromental Concern and concerns the Las Vegas Bear Paw Poppy which is a protected plant and grows in the area.
From here I'll de-code the letter I received from the Las Vegas BLM office. If you've been on the trails back there you've noticed that parts of the trailhead and Rainbow Gardens has been fenced off using old railroad ties and cable. In these areas they've managed to stop folks from running off-trail and illeagaly dumping. What BLM is propossing is to use the same type of fenceing on the main trails that are open for vehicle use. Those trails are Lava Butte, Rainbow Gardens, Middle Wash, and Kodachrome. The fenceing would be on both sides of the trails and on sections of the boundry along Lake Mead Blvd and Pabco Road. About 74 miles total of post and cable will be installed preventing vehicles from going out of bounds but keeping the above trails open to use. I repeat, the trails will remain open, you'd just have to stay between the lines so to say when traveling on them.
