US forest service is looking for cooperation among 4x4 and out door enthusiasts to help visually inspect weather scan and snow tell stations for damage and vandalism. these stations are located in SMNRA and Sheep Mountain Range areas.

the following was received from the USFS through www.getoutdoorsnevada.org

website's volunteer muster

"Weather Station Volunteers Needed
The Forest Service is looking for volunteers to help with weather stations located in Lovell Canyon and on the west side of the mountain near Wheeler Wash. The weather stations were recently constructed and are highly technical pieces of equipment that need to be checked at least twice per month in the summer and about once a month in the winter, maybe less. The work would basically involve the volunteer driving to the site over 4x4 roads, looking at the fencing and/or equipment at each site, and reporting back to the Forest Service on damage or any other out of the ordinary occurrences. Eventually additional work may include repairs and working with the data from the sites.

Interested volunteers should contact Jim Hurja with the US Forest Service
at 702-839-5568."

various stations location and their data can be viewed at the following websites

OK Sept 06 10 am at lovel canyon rd and 160

ANy one who cares to can meet up with Jim Hurja and cruise up to the scan station at the summit. ANy one interested in meeting with the USFS researcher this would be a good time. after that your on your own to do as you wish as many nearby trails are doable; fence line trail and rocky gap immediately comes to mind

as an aside Jim has two stations in the pine nut road area that need to be periodically check on. since we have adopted trails in that area I have invited him (and the New USFS Rubicon jeep) to Join us for the sept 27th run.

The thought of tagging it with a backroaders sticker is just too much.

I hope that you guys got some good pics of this event, and showing the cooperation between the USFS and the Backroaders.
If someone could write a little press release, we could get it out across some of the 4x4 sites to show how we work with the USFS.

Thanks

Todd
