Nevada Backroaders

The BLM has requested the help of all OHV enthusiasts to help lengthen a fence to limit access to a canyon in the Logandale Trail System containing a large amount of petroglyphs. The canyon has been vandalized recently and the BLM constructed a fence to limit access into the canyon. Evidence shows that motorcycles and ATVs have been driven up and over small hills on one side of the fence (shown in the second photo), accessing the canyon and causing more defacing of the petroglyphs.

Robert Wandell, Supervisor of Recreational Planning has asked members of the OHV community to help install a portion of fence to stop the ATVs and motorcycles from creating new unauthorized trails and causing further damage.

For those of you who have never been there, here's some easy to follow directions:

Exit 93 from I-15 north, turn right, heading east. Go approximately 5.5 miles and turn right on Liston Ave. There's a Chinese restaurant/American BBQ place (go figure!) on that corner as a landmark. Liston dead ends into the railroad tracks. Turn right and cross over the railroad tracks. Turn right again. Follow the road as it curves around. In about a mile, you'll see what we refer to as Stoney's Pad on the left.

Too hot for the club run for me and definitly too hot to help BLM -
I still don't understand why they try to block that stuff off - Do they really think it will prevent damage? The type of people that are doing damage aren't going to stay out just because they put up a barrier. I just can't believe someone has nothing better to do than destroy those petroglyphs. Its really sad that they have to put up that ugly barrier in the middle of such a cool place to try and keep vandals out when it really won't do much good. They will find another way in if they really want to. It just prevents civil people from seeing what is out there.

Bad timing with the club run this weekend, not that I'd want to help. It is a shame that the fence is going up. It will never stop the destruction of the land. The fence will be destroyed then it's a free pass to the petroglyphs anyway. The only thing we can do is keep doing what is right in hopes that the ones who don't, get caught sometime down the trail. Then teach other's to do what is right so things like this may be there for future generations.

I am not sure I would help them construct more fence.
The fence is not stopping the destruction or vandelism of the petroglyphs. If they want to construct a fence, then build one right at the area that will really keep people off the rock, and petroglyphs.

I am surprised that someone has not pulled down the fence yet with their truck, and taken the cable. That happened over here when the BLM tried to close a trail and area.
I would not condone doing something illegal.

I would show up to ask them some questions about who authorized the fence, and where was the opportunity for public comment on this?
Did they do a NEPA and EIS/EA review? In one of the other threads, Mac said they did, but I would ask to see it.

We need to keep a good working relationship with the local land managers, and not helping with this, will only show that we do not want to help.
If I was to help, I would tell them, that it is under durress, and that I want to see something else built that will actually protect the petroglyphs, then keep my OHV away from the area. Find a way to build a fence at the area, that will keep people off the petroglyphs, so they can not damage them.

was at the Vegas Valley 4x4 meeting last night ....
he explained his reason to close a section of "trail"

I agree with his reason and no longer oppose the closing of this section.

Robert was asked to re-think using fence materials and to use natural rock to create a walking path.
He said he would look into other options.

I would support a new "Rock " path to enhance the area.

communication is key...
The local Tribes were consulted and we were not.
hopefully we all learned from this event.

it`s an emergency effort to keep vehicles away from the area.

education is key..
establish a way to teach others the value of the past.

locking up the past...
keeping these sites secret is not working

most people who use these areas already know these sites exist.

so someone that is eldery or disabled and unable to hike through the deep sand and rocks isn't allowed to see the site? they're not "good enough" to see the beauty of the canyon and share in the history of it? and the cable is going to stop the vandals who are probably even more po'd now that there's a barrier and willing to do even more damage? how is this helping? i'm all for stopping vandalism but stopping equal access for everyone to a site on public land isn't the way to do it. just my 2 cents worth. rant off.

Re-located from my beloved Mojave to Texas. Where did all the mountains go???

Robert w/BLM plans on doing some kind of hardscape/walking path that isn't obtrusive and will blend in.

I'm one of those that can't access this site anymore but hope that is a temporary situation.

Since I live out here I would be more than happy to help whenever possible but I won't help with poles and cables. those only get destroyed and angers others. Sometimes you just have to realize that you can't protect everything and only hope that through education that sites like these will survive.
