Leaving Friday morning, September 21st. Will met up at the travel plaza on US 93 and the I-15 at 0900. The trail starts at exit 100 on the I-15.

Will travel about 75 miles offroad and stop at the old Carp siding. This was a steam train stop way back when. Then off to see the Elgin schoolhouse if we can then to Caliente for gas and grub.

We'll leave Caliente then head to Delamar. (about 20 miles of pavement) The plan is to camp in Delamar and do some trails, mine exploring and spend some time walking the ruins. Bring flashlights, safety gear, etc. If you're into rappelling, by all means, bring your gear.

Bring your telescopes and cameras with tripods as you are guaranteed a great shot of the Milky Way if the weather works for us. Temps at night could dip into the upper 40's to high 50's so pack accordingly. It's primative camping so be prepared. If we have enough interest we could do kind of a potluck dinner by the campfire. If not, it's hot dogs and hamburgers for us. :)

The next morning we'll head out and stop by the Delamar Perlite Mine.

This is a stock friendly run! We've been to Delamar many times in our FJ and never had any isues. For those that like to have some xtra fun, the road into town is a long series of whoops where you CAN get some air! Trust me, we've done it!

We'd love to have some interest in this one as we really don't want to camp out there alone.

For the paranormal explorers in the bunch, there are multiple recorded accounts of the mysterious sounds of a piano playing late at night coming from the valley.

PM me or call me if interested in this run so I can keep a head count and answer any questions that may come up.

It's my understanding that the area around Elgin got hammered hard by a couple big storms in the last couple weeks. Be careful and prepare to turn around and backtrack if necessary.
I know 2 members that went up that way years ago and also after some good monsoon rains. They saw what looked like a normal water crossing, however the bottom was very soft and deeeep mud, and ended up submirgeing a Grand to half way up the windshield. Yes water got inside and ruined everything and Maxx was not a happy wheeler.

I was told the Kane Springs road was passable today, mostly just rutted with a few mild washouts here and there. So I'd imagine the Elgin road would be about the same, though that area did get hit hard yesterday afternoon. The road (SR317) from Elgin to Caliente has some (new) serious washouts, mainly along the shoulders, so be careful. We fixed some of them 2 weeks ago and that night it flooded again and washed all our work out to Lake Mead. Next week our "special" permit goes into effect so we can move the creek away from the road and hopefully start getting the road repaired right.

The Elgin School house is closed, as SR317 from Kershaw-Ryan SP to Elgin is technically closed except for local traffic. You can still walk around it, they just don't open it for tours right now. By the way, the apples at Bradshaw's Ranch across the road from the school house should be ready to pick by now. If the gate is open, they are there, just drive up to the house. It's not every day you get to pick apples in the desert. IIRC it's $10 for a 5 gallon bucket.

Also, not sure if the Delamar perlite mine you speak of is the one by Pahroc Summit or not. If it is, it's an active mine just so you know. They process the perlite at the mill in Antelope Canyon in Caliente.

I might see you out there, I'm planning on leading the October run to Delamar, both the cemetaries, Helene and another mine from Alamo and back. Similar to what Tom did about 5 years ago or so for anyone that went. Anyway, I still have some spots to pre run. So if you see a dark blue F-150 shoot by, it might be me.

The Perlite mine we are talking about is about 10 miles from the one you are speaking of. It is abandoned and has been for quite some time. It was used as a Civil Defense shelter back in the 1950's. We go there often and collect Obsidian. :) There is an endless supply of it from the tailings of the mine.

The turnoff is about 10 miles before the one to delamar if you are coming from Alamo.

Actually, that area was what I was talking about, it's been some time (maybe 20 years?) since I ever went to the one you did, as it was active when I was there. The mine that's about a mile or less north of there is the one I was talking about being active. My cousins run it, their finished perlite product is called Pahroc Giant, it can be bought locally and even online from some hydroponics shops :roll: I'd have to ask them, but I think that mine you went to is or was under their operations too. They have a few perlite claims around the county, it's a pretty good business for them right now since so many things are being produced using perlite.

I was just curious as I knew of no perlite mines in the Delamar area, at least any that have been mined. That area is usually referred to as Pahroc Valley or just the North or South Pahrocs around here, so the Delamar name tag was throwing me. I think Delamar Valley doesn't "officially" start until you drop off the little summit about 5 miles east of there. And to add confusion, the actual valley has 2 names, split by US 93.

Something to keep in mind for next time: I have yet to see it in person, but just due East of that mine is where an F-16 crashed last spring, killing the pilot. His friends and family set up a memorial at the site.

"Several generations of school children were educated in this little building, which covered grades one through eight from 1922 through 1967. The one-room schoolhouse at Elgin in eastern Nevada was built by Reuben Bradshaw, whose father, James Bradshaw, homesteaded a ranch in 1880 at the lower end of Rainbow Canyon, which is now noted by signs for Highway 317.
