Nevada Backroaders

I was looking at the hills just west of the city in the town center area on Google Earth and it looks like there are quite a few trails. Are these trail open and if so are are there any that are stock (wrangler x) friendly. Just looking for a good place to take in some scenery maybe even a night run to enjoy the city lights.

out down Blue Diamond, before you get to mountain pass, there is a place called Cottonwood Valley that I like to go to on occasion. it's got some neat scenery and quite a few trails, even a small petroglyph site, a weird triangle house. It is mostly a mountain bike area, but there are some Jeep trails out there, too.

they can be very rocky, loose and bumpy, though, so be prepared for a spinal adjustment (hey, free chiropractic advice). air down and have disconnects installed.


++there are some trails that lead up into the mountains on the east side of the valley. be VERY careful if you go up there. You can see trail, but it turns into nasty poof-dust stuff that WILL get you stuck, lockers or not, winch or not.

wheeling out here, I've seen deer and burros, and you can always end the day in Goodsprings at the Pioneer.

heres a pic of the Mt Potosi area cottonwood is on the bottom of the page , Little potosie is on the far left.

the entrance prior to mountain springs pass is on the right center of the page andhas a sign marked as Boy scout camp or some such.the potosi mine is near the top center of the page. there is a mule trail that leads up there to a narrow guage rail bed as well as a finiculary cable way. from what Im told neither of these trail are recomended of OHV travel of any sort.



there are a bunch more trails up there so you sould secure a USGS 7.5 minute map or other . Perhaps using google earth to examine the area throughly prior to heading out and print some pics of the many forks would be wise.

Oh yeah there is a trail out there in the S. town center area that the VV4W & TK guys use to run called coyote falls or some such .

it is out of bounds (private property)AFAIK and going there could land you a hefty fine . you could seriously trash your junk Plus you could get ejected from quite a few clubs if people found out you were doing runs out there.

I roamed around out there some years ago when I wheeled about all on my own. I wouldnt recommed you do likewise even if it was AOK to roll around out there

as far as i know blue diamond hill is mostly private property these days. one of the big home builders in town bought it up over the years to build houses on but keeps getting shot down on the construction. the trails are probably left over from ages ago. i think the first few years of hump & bump were held on trails out there. i could be wrong but the last time i checked the area out, 5 or so years ago, i was met with lotsof gates, fences, and security guards. some one else may have better info. the cottonwood valley area south of blue diamond and sr160 has lots of interesting stuff as jj and tim have said.

Re-located from my beloved Mojave to Texas. Where did all the mountains go???

I lurked at a VV4W meeting and there was some contraversy surrounding one of those trails I think it was coyote falls.

Im almost certain it is Out of Bounds

Rubicon Bob could probaly shed some light on the legality of being on it.

Everything within the mountains that surroung Las Vegas, except for the Nellis Dunes area, is off-limits. Everything around Town Center is private property. Closed. The fines are very stiff. There are some trails around the Mount Potosi area that are cool. But be careful, it is too easy to find yourself out-of-bounds. Rangers and other law enforcement do watch the area.

I am off on Thursdays also, I wouldn't mind going but I would have to bring my 23 month old son. I wouldn't want to go if I was going to slow you down thou. Him and I have done Mormon well before but it was an all day event(low speeds) with frequent stops to let him play. If I stumble upon a babysitter I will be all in thou.

Would it be possible to meet at a restaurant where one could get eggs, bacon. home fries, buttered toast and coffee?

it's mostly dirt roads out there around Potosi.

there's some fun stuff, but not much in the way of big rocks.

not that I know of, but I'm not much a fan of the rocks too much.

we could do like 9am at the Petro on Blue Diamond Rd (south end of town, I-15 and Blue Diamond) on Thursday am.
