AZ Strip?

702FJCrew is going to be taking a trip through "AZ Strip" northeast of Lake Mead May 31-June 1.

Does anybody know much about this area? It looks beautiful.

Their Google Maps trail entry

They have posted some pics of a past trail run, with views similar to the Grand Canyon:

Hare,

The maps they are talking about so much in that thread are from the AZ BLM. I have one that I got from the Ranger Station at the General Store and motel in Jacob Lake, AZ. The problem is that the Arizona Strip District is really HUGE! My map shows all of the Forest Roads, numbers and Topo as well.

I couldn't find the exact location that they are discussing in the thread, but if you can get a GPS coordinate, or even a point on a Google Map, I'm sure with the maps I have we can find a way in to anywhere.

(And, if an FJ can get there, then a Jeep can certainly make it to pull them out)

I've never been there, but is that not Toroweap?

I know exactly where that is. It's Whittmore Rapids. On the trail, it's just south of the Bar-10 Ranch.Been there a few times. Last time I went we took the 2wd truck. Not a hard trail.

Thank you. I think I found it marked as "camping spot" in their google maps trail entry.

Google maps actually gave me driving directions when asked.

Are those google maps directions correct? 5+ hours to the camping spot?

5 hours, that seems about right. Depends on how fast you want to drive. Most of the trail is graded road. (dusty) There are park signs with arrows pointing to Whitmore Point, never saw any signs with numbers on them.

I agree completely.

I have gone to Toroweep and camped in the campground there. To get to Toroweep was about 80 miles from St. George on dirt roads. It looks like to get to this one will take a little less time since you don't go over Mt. Trumble and then south again. Figure at least 2.5 hours to St. George, then about 60 miles of dirt road to their spot. Maybe you could get there in 4 to 4.5 hours if you really push it. The dirt roads aren't bad, but pushing speed can get dangerous in the middle of nowhere

I'll try to get my pics of Toroweep posted,

Can't wait to see those pics, Travis.

I learned respect for dirt roads growing up in Idaho. I lived in the country at times, always had relatives on them, and worked on farms as a teenager. My approach is to go slow enough that I don't "drift" over the gravel, as some are want to do. If that means slowing waaay down so that washboard doesn't become a "whoopdie", than so be it. I consider myself a conservative driver.

I'll prolly wait to go until I can get a buddy, and after mounting external gas cans for extra exploring. The AZ Strip looks HUGE!

Well Dan,
If I did everything right, then this is a link to the pics I have of Toroweep. Sorry there are no pics into the canyon, it's a long story...

I took some photos on our last trip to Whitmore Point. http://rides.webshots.com/album/385926352RSaCez It also includes some photos from where we hiked down to the river. Some where I heard that this is the easiest place to hike to the bottom of the canyon. Trust me, it's not that easy. The current is brutal, so watch where you swim! :D

Jeepgal: Is Whitmore Point anywhere near Toroweap. Pulled up your pics, and they are great. Been to Toroweap, but came in from the Kanab end.

I think Toroweap is east of the Whitmore 'road'. There is a 4 way intersection at the Mt. Trumble school house, south is to Whitmore, east is to Toroweap.

It seems that if you came in from Kanab, go west 'till you get to the old school house then make a left, south to Whitmore.
