Anyone been to Goldstone, CA lately?

I heard a rumor that NASA/JPL were gonna tear the big dishes down, and I want to see it live before either they do that or I find work.

I found this on Google... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goldstone_ ... ns_Complex

Some history here... http://wikimapia.org/7446818/Goldstone_CA_site

That would be a cool place to see.

Hello everyone, new guy here. Thanks for letting me join your E-group. This is my 1st posting.

I joined because, after reading many of the posting it looks like we have some of the same interest(s)

I know this is an old posting, but I think I should share some info ASAP about the two Goldstones mentioned here.

The new Goldstone:
The Deep space complex is very neat to a space junkie like me. The tour guides are very knowledgeable. I did not do this tour with any kids but some kids could really get a lot out of one of these tours. Here is a link to set up a tour time. If I can, I’ll post some pics

http://deepspace.jpl.nasa.gov/dsn/goldstone/index.html

The old Goldstone:
A neat place with tons of history. I’m sure a little net searching will reveal a lot of info, so I won’t post that. BUT this area is about to be closed to the public with the expansion of Ft Irwin. Last time I was in this area was early 08, and new fences where being installed then. So if you plan to visit you might want to go very soon. Even if the area is closed, there is still a lot to see in this area, weather you like Geology, history, rock art, etc, etc.

A good friend posted this on the internet, and with his permission I’m re-posting it here. Since someone posted a ‘want’ to go to this area, I figured this could be useful info to some. I removed the last two paragraphs since they where mainly notes to people on the other site. FYI Superior Valley is where the ghost town of Goldstone sits, and is part of the planned expansion of the Fort Irwin Marine Corps Training Base.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

“I went out to Superior Valley North of Barstow this weekend (Jan 10 & 11), and the new boundary fences are almost complete. There are no gates yet, but security forces are vigilant, and I managed to get a personal visit and escort from base police accompanied by a pleasant order to not come back. The base personnel I had contact with are very courteous and professional and IMO if you have a bad meeting with them you are at least 51% screwing up.

I met up with some people in this area, but outside the expansion area that same day, and was informed the Base police are taking the trespass very seriously, and from their own experience, draw guns and handcuffs are used at the first sign of non-compliance. This may be BS, I’m just relaying what I was told, like you are reading what I’m telling you.
In closing about the expansion area I would say anyone who has had the pleasure visit this area relish the memories and don’t go back. For those who had planned to do it later, you might want to consider yourself too late.

I swung thru Coolgardie and there is now work being done to add bat-covers to mine shafts. Anyone concerned the outfit installing the new bat cover is supposed to be on the show Dirty Jobs 1-13-09. “

Show Title: Abandoned Mine Plugger
Dirty Jobs: abandoned mine plugger, bird banding coordinator
Premiere: Jan. 13, 2008

Did anyone catch this episode? I don't have the Discovery Channel on my cable...I just have basic cable. I guess I'll have to wait to see if I can find it online in the next week or so.
